Austin-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Collin Mullins returns with his sophomore release, What’s It Gonna Take, a reflective collection exploring the emotional landscape of modern life in an increasingly polarized, digital, and algorithm-driven world. The album grapples with the challenge of staying connected and resisting the pull of apathy.
Blending turn-of-the-millennium alternative and indie rock with tight pop sensibilities and expressive guitar work, the record carries a sense of aughts nostalgia while nodding to darker, more contemporary indie textures. Lyrically, it leans less on personal confession and more on observation. Capturing snapshots of tension, resilience, and the complex emotions that define the present moment. Mullins produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered the album himself. With its release on May 15th, he returns to the stage for his first public performance in over six years.
“with a style that almost marries Mac DeMarco’s downtempo lackadaisical charm with Dayglow’s upbeat and heavily-processed polish” - Jack Anderson, KUTX Austin
“The bright indie pop of Darwin Deez comes to mind, particularly during Laughin’ Large. His more laidback moments are reminiscent of Jack Johnson yet his rockier ones recall elements of The Strokes. Despite the contrasting styles, the tracks of the album work well together, creating a coherent whole.” - Graeme Smith, York Calling
